Read the full Q3 2025 transcript ↗All statements other than statements of historical fact are forward-looking statements, including but not limited to statements regarding initiatives, plans, projections, guidance, and expectations for the future. Additional information can be found under forward-looking statements in our earnings release and risk factors in our most recent Form 10-K and subsequent filings made with the SEC. Later, Ryan will discuss results for the third quarter and provide an update on full year guidance. For the third quarter, we reported comparable sales growth of 3% with both Pro and DIY channels delivering growth.
Adjusted operating margin expanded by 370 basis points year-over-year to 4.4%, demonstrating progress on the execution of our strategic plan. During the quarter, we also strengthened our balance sheet by proactively reorganizing our debt capital structure. We raised nearly $2 billion in cash, which provides enhanced liquidity for the business as well as a path to return to an investment-grade credit rating in the future. Based on our performance to date and expectations for the remainder of Q4, we have updated our full-year guidance.
We have reaffirmed the midpoint of our prior comparable sales growth and adjusted operating margin guidance, which implies approximately 200 basis points of margin expansion for the year. To recap, our turnaround goals are built on three pillars, each supported by targeted initiatives that we believe will position us to deliver profitable growth. Throughout the year, we have taken deliberate and strategic actions to position Advance Auto Parts as a trusted long-term growth partner for our vendors. We expect this initiative to deliver incremental growth over and above the initial 50 basis point uplift as these markets mature over the next 12-18 months.
- Advance Auto Parts delivered its strongest quarter in over two years, with comparable sales growth of 3% and both the Pro and DIY channels posting positive growth.
- Adjusted operating margin expanded 370 basis points year-over-year to 4.4% (adjusted operating income of $90 million), the company's highest operating margin in over two years.
- Adjusted gross profit from continuing operations was $913 million, or 44.8% of net sales, an expansion of about 260 basis points driven by footprint-optimization savings and strategic-sourcing product-cost reductions.
- Adjusted diluted EPS from continuing operations was $0.92, versus a loss of $0.05 in the prior-year quarter.
- Management reorganized the debt capital structure, raising nearly $2 billion in cash, which enhances liquidity for the turnaround and creates a path back to an investment-grade credit rating.
- Pro comparable sales grew just over 4%, the fifth consecutive quarter of positive Pro performance, while DIY comps were positive low single-digit and improved sequentially on a two-year basis.
- Completed the new assortment framework rollout across the top 50 DMAs (roughly 70% of sales) ahead of schedule, delivering an initial 50 bps uplift expected to build further as markets mature over 12-18 months.
- Accelerated market-hub expansion, opening 6 hubs in Q3 to reach 28 and raising the full-year target to 33 (from 29), while advancing DC consolidation toward 16 U.S. distribution centers, down from 38 just two years ago.
- Net sales from continuing operations declined about 5% year-over-year to $2.0 billion, primarily reflecting the store-optimization/footprint reduction completed in Q1 (and the prior Worldpac divestiture).
- On a GAAP basis, results were weak, with diluted EPS of -$0.02 and an operating margin of just 1.1%, weighed down by a supplier-related charge and ongoing turnaround costs.
- Recorded a $28 million non-cash charge to cost of sales for estimated future credit losses tied to a supplier's bankruptcy proceedings (the supplier is under 2% of COGS); management framed it as an isolated one-off.
- Sales trends moderated within the quarter, strongest in the first four weeks and softening over the last eight, and Q4 started soft in the first three weeks, with more pressure on the DIY channel amid consumer budget adjustments.
- LIFO expense rose to $33 million in Q3 on cost inflation and is guided to approximately $70 million in Q4, adding 80-100 basis points of gross-margin pressure in the fourth quarter.
- Year-to-date free cash flow was -$277 million, and full-year free cash flow guidance remains negative-to-modest (-$90 million to $80 million).
