Meta Platforms acquires GIPHY

Meta Platforms acquired GIPHY, a transaction completed in May 2020.

GIPHY operates in Family of Apps, is based in New York, New York, USA. GIPHY is a leading library and search engine for GIFs and stickers used to make conversations more expressive. Facebook acquired it into the Instagram team to integrate its GIF library across Instagram and other apps; at the time about half of GIPHY's traffic already came from Facebook's family of apps. The deal was later unwound: the UK Competition and Markets Authority ordered Meta to divest GIPHY, and Meta sold it to Shutterstock in 2023. Deal terms were not officially disclosed.

Facebook said bringing Instagram and GIPHY together would make it easier for people to find the right GIFs and stickers in Stories and Direct while continuing to support creators and artists.

Advisory firms were not disclosed for this transaction.
