Microsoft Corporation acquired Firefly Network, a transaction announced in April 1998.

Firefly Network operates in Web Essentials group (Interactive Media Group), is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Firefly Network, an MIT Media Lab spinoff, developed privacy technology enabling the trusted exchange of personal information online and was instrumental in the early TRUSTe program and the P3P privacy standard. Microsoft acquired the Cambridge, Massachusetts company to accelerate its implementation of the World Wide Web Consortium's Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) and deliver more privacy-rich internet products and services.
