Before co-founding 10x Genomics, he was Vice President of Applications at QuantaLife, a privately held life sciences company that developed a droplet digital PCR platform, and earlier was Founding Architect and Director of research and development at 23andMe.

He received a Ph.D. in biomedical informatics from Stanford University and an A.B. in applied mathematics from Harvard College.
